Raza Graduation

Raza Graduation is a culturally relevant celebration with a genuine reflection of the Chicano/Latino culture and values conveyed through a message delivered by the keynote speaker, the student speakers, the cultural entertainment and food. The celebration allows students to participate in a more intimate and meaningful celebration with students who share a similar ethnic background. Raza Graduation also serves as a means to communicate the importance of an education for Chicano/Latino youth, SSU underclass students, families and the community.

One of the best components of Raza Graduation is that it allows students to recognize parents, family, and others for their support and love in helping them to attain their college degrees. This is significant since college degrees represent the ability to advocate and contribute in a society whose criteria for success and happiness is remote to people of Chicano/Latino heritage.

However, the Raza Graduation celebration is about more than just the students. It is an event organized for all SSU Chicano/Latino faculty, staff, students, and family. During the event MEChA recognizes individuals of the campus community that have made valuable contributions to the success of Chicano/Latino students at SSU. The ladies of Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. also give out their annual scholarship to a deserving high school senior that will be entering college the following year.
